EVELYN GREEN – MUSICAL DIRECTOR AND ACCOMPANIST
OF THE JOHANNESBURG JEWISH MALE CHOIR
Evelyn Green is one of the foremost
accompanists and repetiteur in South Africa. She holds the University of South
Africa Teachers and Performer’s Licentiates; Royal School of Music Teachers and
Performer’s Licentiates, as well as the Fellowship of the Trinity College of
Music. She is an examiner for the
University of South Africa, and is actively engaged in teaching. Evelyn’s
passion is the training of the JJMC as well as the teaching of a number of
Synagogue Choirs and Cantors in Johannesburg.
Evelyn has appeared in numerous concerts
throughout South Africa and Namibia, as well as having appeared on television
and radio nationally and internationally. She performs regularly with leading
instrumentalists and singers. Locally she has visited and played in concerts
and recitals in all the major cities of South Africa.
Evelyn is a founder member of the
Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir, and has been its Accompanist and Secretary from
its inception (38 years). She has toured the USA, Israel, United Kingdom and
Australia with the JJMC. She has
accompanied in concert many renowned Cantors in the world. Evelyn has been the
Musical Director of the JJMC since 2005. The highlight of her career was to lead
the JJMC as Musical Director to the First International Louis Lewandowksi
Choral Festival in Berlin in December 2011.
As part of the program, she co- presented with Prof Lurie, a lecture titled,
An Overview of Cantors and Choirs in
South Africa ….. genesis, current
state and the future.
Evelyn was made an Honoree of the
International Who’s Who of Professional and Business Women, for career
achievements and contributions to Society. She is a recipient of an illuminated
award from the Union of Orthodox Synagogues of South Africa for her
contribution to liturgical music. She was awarded honorary life membership of
the South African Society of Music Teachers.
Those who know her will acknowledge her
significant talent to change tracks when called upon to do so.
